A Picture is worth a thousand words: Instagram-able places in Grand Cayman

It’s no secret – Grand Cayman is one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean above and below water. From our white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters to the rainbow of flora and fauna you will find onshore, we are spoilt here on our little piece of paradise.

Once you visit Plantana, you will want to show off your amazing beach home away from home to all your friends on social media. However, with beauty surrounding you everywhere you look, you may not know where to point your lens first.

To help you choose, we have compiled a list of some of our favorite, picture-worthy places.

George Town Waterfront

Walking through George Town is like taking a tour of Cayman’s history. Many of the buildings have held multiple purposes throughout their time and serve as a reminder of the importance of remembering our past while moving towards our future. There are multiple delicately crafted monuments and statues paying tribute to those who helped create the island we now know.

Be sure to look out for Elmslie Church, whose roof was designed by Capt. Rayal Bodden to mimic the hull of a ship turned upside down; Celebration Park and Quincentennial Square, featuring several homages to Cayman’s history and national heroes; as well as Fort George, an 18th century fort which helped defend Grand Cayman from attacks by Spanish marauders and pirates.

Pedro St. James

Speaking of historic buildings, Pedro St. James has been home to many important parts of Cayman’s story. First constructed in the 18th century, the building was restored back to its former glory in the 1990s, featuring wrap-around porches, exposed stonework and handmade staircases.

Not only is the structure itself a stunning piece of architecture, the views surrounding the property are equally breath taking. We recommend visiting around sunset for the best photo opportunities.

Botanic Park

If nature speaks to you like it is your first language, you are going to want to charge your camera battery and schedule a few hours at the Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park. Both the Floral and Heritage Gardens will introduce you to the rainbow of indigenous plants found in Cayman, including our national tree, the Silver Thatch Palm, and national flower, the Banana Orchid. You might also be lucky enough to meet one of the endangered blue iguanas, who reside in the garden.

Rum Point

Take this as a sign that you need to visit this beach front restaurant and bar. While it can be easy to be distracted by the beautiful dock, rainbow of picnic benches and forest of palm trees, what you will need to keep your eye out for is their hilarious signage. Their most iconic sign, the ‘Questions not to ask…’ board, will certainly have you laughing out loud.

Starfish Point

You’ll never be more grateful for the water visibility in Cayman than when you visit Starfish Point, in North Side. Here you can get up close and personal with these sea stars. Just be sure to leave them in the water as you snap your photos as they do need the water to breathe.

Lover’s Wall & the Blowholes

In the eastern part of the island you will find numerous spots to stop and snap shots of the coastline, including Lover’s Wall on the Queen’s Highway.  Capture the wooden sign affixed to the stone wall along with a stunning backdrop – dark rocky ironshore and deep blue ocean crashing against the shore.  A little further ahead you will also encounter the Blowholes, which make for great photo ops particularly when the waters are choppy.  Who doesn’t love the geyser-like effect of salt water bursting towards the heavens?!

Camana Bay

This waterfront town has worked hard to ensure its architecture doesn’t fight with the natural beauty surrounding it but rather compliments and highlights it.  The design of Camana Bay has been crafted to lead you directly to the Crescent, the central hub featuring a multitude of restaurants as well as views of the water and boat dock. Several larger-than-life murals have also popped up thanks to Kaaboo Cayman. Keep an eye out for them, they won’t be hard to miss.

And of course…Seven Mile Beach!

It has been voted one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, year after year, for a reason. The white sand and turquoise waters provide the perfect backdrop for that vacation selfie. And our private slice of Seven Mile Beach will help ensure you remain the one and only focus of the picture.

May: Celebrating Carnival Season

May means three things in Cayman: feathers, fun and fanfare.  This month has three weekends packed with back to back carnival fun thanks to Batabano, Junior Batabano, Braccanal and CayMas.

With 36 years of unforgettable costumes and entertainment, Batabano is a celebration of the colours and spirit that are found in Caribbean culture. The music, dance and pageantry that accompany the main parade for adults, happening Saturday, May 4th, takes its roots from the diverse cultural landscape that makes up our region. Each group or ‘band’ has costumes highlighting various themes including magic, arcade games and the colors in Cayman’s glorious sunsets for this year’s parade. The route starts at Public Beach, passes right in front of Plantana and heads along West Bay Road toward Fort Street, George Town.   Don’t be shy – the revellers love to take photos!

Junior Batabano is an opportunity for the local youth and families to get involved in the carnival fun. Schools from across the islands prepare their costumes weeks in advance of the celebration to be sure they are road ready for the parade on Saturday, May 11th.  The children dance and perform within a rainbow of colours and with music all around George Town. The fun continues after the parade with face painting, mask decorating and food stalls in front of the Glass House on Elgin Avenue.

Heading to Cayman Brac for the day? Braccanal is Cayman Brac’s very own carnival with events happening May 16th – 20th.  The main parade takes place at 3pm on Saturday, May 18th, so if you’re making a trip over, join in on the fete with flags in hand!

CayMAS caps off the carnival fun for Cayman. Taking place on Saturday, May 18th, the carnival’s main parade starts in the heart of George Town and makes it way to Public Beach, meaning Plantana guests can enjoy the finale of the parade and even join in on the after party at the beach afterwards.  Although there are fewer bands taking part, this party train still packs a punch with jaw-dropping costumes creating an ocean of colours along West Bay Road. You can also look forward to performance from local dance troupes during the parade.

Pre and post festival events featuring steal-pan competitions, local performers and lots and lots of food, together with a front row seat out in front of Plantana, means these events are a must!

Don’t miss out on the carnival fun! Book your last-minute stay with Plantana now.
